Housing

House rent is being paid monthly as against annually or 2 years for a new tenant back  in Nigeria. For a new tenant all that is required is a month rent, a month deposit and 2500Ksh($28) for electricity deposit.

Let me explain further, If for example you want to rent a bedsitter, which is more of a room that has a toilet and shower, a sink and wall shelve which would serve the area where you will cook and do your dishes.

House rents is dependent on location just as it is everywhere in the world. You get a bedsitter and the rent is 7500Ksh ($84) all you need to pay is 7500ksh (rent) + 7500ksh (rent deposit) + 2500ksh (electricity deposit). The rent is like a guarantor fund, if you are moving out and the manager of the house sees there is no damage to the room, he refunds you the 7500ksh, likewise the electricity deposit if you are not owing Kenya Power.

You are expected to pay your house rent monthly into the property managers/owners bank account provided and by the 5th of every new month i.e for August rent, you must pay on or before 5th of August lest you pay a fine of about 10% of your rent.

You are free to move out a place after just one month, if you do not like it, just inform the manager of the place in time so they can make arrange for the refund of your deposits. You may decide to stay two months at the place and you can discuss with the manager after the first month that rather paying another rent for the second month, you will utilize the deposit as payment for the second month, the manager may or may not agree with this.

Accommodation is easy to get, as it is common to see HOUSE FOR RENT pasted on many buildings with the contact numbers of the managers. You can find an apartment in the morning , pay the rent in the afternoon  and move in the evening !

Electricity is 24hrs and the bill is relatively affordable.
