Commuting...............Mobile Madness!

My first visit to Nairobi years back as l came to spend my 3weeks Christmas vacation. On my first morning in Nairobi, l boarded the Matatu, crazy experience l must say!

Matatu is the local name for commercial buses. l must confess that l was awed by the sheer art work on the exteriors of these buses, it was mobile art to behold. l recall when l used to stand still to appreciate the colourful impressions imprinted on the vehicles but now my vision has gotten used to them but what l have not gotten used to is the club-like feel most of their interiors evoke.......loud blaring of dance hall mixes from their sound systems and both young and old have so gotten used to it!

ln my commuting in these buses l now know that almost every RnB song has a dancehall version, the day l heard dancehall versions of some of Celine Dion's music, l gave up! Nigerian music is also a must in many of these Matatus.

The crazier the artwork on the exterior of these Matatus, the higher the likelihood of the crazier mixes inside and being the type that is not comfortable with loud music, l try to keep away from these Matatus whenever l can. How Kenyans receive calls inside these Matatus with such high music level still baffles me!

They become crazier at night, with the blaring horns and music, interior and exterior neon light, you can comfortably tag it a mobile night club. l would rather go with the plain Kenya Bus Service for the sake of my mental health.......lol!

  1. i had the opportunity of traveling from nai to kisimu while on a visit to kenya recently. it was fun i must say. being on the matatus in nai was a totally new experience for me; one i loved. the loud blaring dancehall music, the 32inch lcd tv's, the careless driving of the matatus....all added to the fun. i love kenya!

    1. Those blaring dancehall music gets to my nerves though l love the comfy settings. For the matatus, the more it is pimped the more your client base expands. Who would be bothered with such in Lagos!
